Recovering Your Lost Password or Credentials in MetaTrader 5
It can happen to anyone. You go to log in to your trading account and suddenly realize you do not remember the password. Or maybe you are switching devices and cannot locate your login details. Losing access to your trading account can be stressful, especially when the market is moving. Thankfully, MetaTrader 5 offers a few straightforward ways to recover your credentials and get back into the platform.
Understanding the different types of passwords
Before jumping into recovery steps, it is helpful to know what kind of password you are dealing with. In MetaTrader 5, each trading account typically has two passwords. The master password allows full access, including placing and closing trades. The investor password gives view-only access, which is often used for monitoring performance or sharing account visibility with others.
There may also be passwords associated with your broker’s client portal or with services connected to your trading tools. Knowing which one you need to recover makes the process smoother.
Recovering your trading account password
If you have forgotten your trading account password, the recovery process usually starts with your broker. MetaTrader 5 itself does not manage account credentials directly. Each broker controls the login and password system for its clients.

Log in to your broker’s client portal through their website and look for a password reset option. Most brokers allow you to request a new password by email or through a secure form. Some may send a temporary code or require identity verification for extra security.
Once you receive the new password, open MetaTrader 5 and go to “File,” then click “Login to Trade Account.” Enter your account number, the new password, and select the correct server. If everything matches, your account will reconnect instantly.
What to do if you lose your account number
Losing your account number is another common issue. This number is required every time you log in to MetaTrader 5. If you cannot remember it, check your email inbox for registration confirmation messages from your broker. The account number is usually included in your welcome email.
If you still cannot locate it, contact your broker’s support team. Provide them with identifying information like your registered name, email address, and phone number. Once verified, they will resend your account number.
Resetting the password from inside the platform
In some cases, you might still have access to your MetaTrader 5 platform but want to change your password for security reasons. You can do this directly from within the platform.
Go to the “Navigator” window, right-click on your account, and select “Change Password.” You will be prompted to enter the current password and your new password twice. Make sure your new password is strong and includes a mix of letters and numbers. Once confirmed, the platform will apply the update.
Keeping your credentials secure for the future
After recovering your access, take a few steps to avoid future issues. Store your login details in a secure password manager. Make use of two-factor authentication if your broker offers it. Avoid sharing your master password with anyone and use the investor password if someone needs view-only access.
Being locked out of your trading account can feel frustrating, but with a clear plan and quick communication with your broker, it is usually resolved fast. MetaTrader 5 is designed to work seamlessly with broker systems, and once your credentials are restored, you will be back to analyzing charts and managing trades in no time.
